What is Periodontal Disease?

Woman with inflamed gum tissue

You might not have heard the term “periodontal disease” before, but you likely know it by another name: gum disease. When plaque isn’t routinely removed from the mouth via brushing and flossing, it can harden into tartar. When tartar is allowed to build up around the gum line and on the roots of the teeth, this can lead to a bacterial infection that slowly starts to break the tissues down. Because it primarily attacks the roots of the teeth, it’s actually the #1 cause of tooth loss around the world, which is why we put a lot of energy into catching and treating it as early as possible!

Scaling & Root Planing

If we determine that you have periodontal disease, our first course of treatment will involve giving you a special type of dental cleaning called scaling and root planing. This is similar to the regular cleanings you receive every six months, except it is solely focused on the gum line and roots of the teeth. It’s designed to remove the harmful tartar and bacteria deposits from along the gums that are the root cause of the infection. Also during this procedure, the roots of your teeth will be smoothed out, which will prevent plaque from gathering around them in the future, drastically lowering your chances of reinfection.
