How Exactly Does Dental Insurance Work?

Many patients assume that dental insurance and medical insurance are virtually identical, but that is not actually true. When using medical insurance, the vast bulk of your available benefits are reserved solely for big emergencies, like illnesses, injuries, or life events such as pregnancy. On the other hand, dental insurance is designed from a preventive standpoint. By covering the cost of essential services like dental checkups and cleanings at 100%, the goal is to help you successfully prevent major problems over the course of your life and reduce your overall cost as well.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Please keep in mind that every insurance plan is a little different, and it’s important to confirm available benefits with your provider before undergoing any treatment. In fact, our team can help with this process once we receive your specific insurance information! However, in most cases, you can expect coverage along the following lines:

  • Essential preventive care (such as biannual checkups and cleanings, diagnostic X-rays, and fluoride treatment for patients under the age of 18) is covered at or near 100%.
  • Simple restorative care (such as root canal therapy and tooth-colored fillings) are partially covered at 70%-80%.
  • More extensive restorative care (such as traditional dentures, crowns, or bridges) are partially covered at around 50%-60%.

We Offer In-Network Savings & Welcome Out-of-Network Providers

At Dental Wellness of Lexington, we are proudly in-network with the following insurance plans:

*Please note at this time we do not accept Medicaid insurance

What does being in-network actually mean, though? Essentially, we have agreed to accept pre-negotiated fees for a wide variety of different services, which means that it will likely be less expensive to visit our dental office when compared to an out-of-network dental office. However, it’s important to keep in mind that this difference may be negligible in certain cases. If you have a different PPO insurance plan and would like to visit us for care, we also happily file claims for out-of-network plans so that you can still access available benefits and maximize them in the ways you deserve.

Do you have any other questions or concerns about using dental insurance? Don’t hesitate to contact us today in Lexington, KY. We hope to become you and your family’s trusted oral healthcare home in the near future.
