Worried Veneers Will Feel Weird? Here’s Why They Won’t

If you’re considering veneers to improve your smile, one of the questions that you might have in mind could be: “What does it feel like to get them?” Veneers are a long-lasting and natural-looking cosmetic solution, and understanding how they feel once you get them and all throughout the treatment process can help you feel more confident in the investment you’re making in your smile. Here’s a brief overview of what you might experience throughout the veneers process.

How Will It Feel to Receive Veneers?

The veneer process generally involves a few different steps spread out over a couple of dental visits. During the first appointment, your dentist will gently reshape a small portion of the enamel on the front surface of your teeth that are being treated—this serves to make room for the veneers and ensures that once they’ve been placed, they’re able to look and feel exactly like your natural teeth. It’s normal to receive a local anesthetic to ensure your comfort during this process, but rest assured, you will not feel any outright pain at all.

After this initial preparation, temporary veneers are placed on the teeth while the custom-made permanent ones are being crafted. These temporary veneers may feel slightly different than your normal teeth, but they still serve to protect your teeth and give you the chance to “test-drive” your new smile.

What Can I Expect After the Veneers Have Been Placed?

Once your permanent veneers are bonded to your teeth, most patients claim they hardly even notice the difference. While it is possible to experience mild sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures in the first few days after treatment, this is normal and goes away as your mouth adjusts. Most patients make this adjustment quickly, but if you notice persistent pain, discomfort when biting, or increased sensitivity that doesn’t seem to improve, it’s time to contact your dentist, as it may indicate an issue with how the veneers were fitted or bonded.

Veneers are designed to look, feel, and function like your natural teeth, and most people can enjoy theirs for several years with proper oral care. That said, if you have any concerns about how the process will feel, don’t worry—your dentist can ensure your comfort and the ultimate success of the treatment!
